Fanzine Ruido 6

The island has a small, quarterly cultural magazine called Ruido, and issue 6 came out on Friday. As usual, they held a fiesta in a local bar, (Rocke's Bar on the Calle Real) with live music from local bands. And as usual, the place was packed.

The quality of the bands on these gigs is variable, but I like live music anyway.

Of course the magazine is on sale.

And the magazine comes with a ticket for the T shirt raffle.

And when the second T shirt went unclaimed, they threw it into the audience.

I didn't win a T shirt, but it was a great night out.

Music in the Streets

There's a new musical project in Santa Cruz de la Palma with backing from local government. On Saturdays, Sundays, and Public holidays, there's often free live music somewhere. So far six groups have joined the scheme, and almost every day, more businesses sign up.

This is a Cuban-style group called Chango, playing at the Kiosko de Eliseo halfway up the Avenida del Puente. They played from noon until about half-past two, and very good they were too.

Live Music

Last night the Chamber Orchestra of Breña Baja gave a concert in Cancajos. It was rather windy, so they moved it to just outside the tourist office. I didn't hear all of it, but they seemed pretty good to me.

Live Music Tonight (Friday 11th)

At 18:30 in Cancajos, there will be a concert by the Chamber orchestra of Breña Baja at the ampitheatre on the promenade. (Start at the main beach and head a few hundred yards south towards the old salt works and the airport. It's small, but you'll know it when you see it.) This is in the open air, so it may be canceled if the weather's bad.

At 20:00 in the theatre classroom (aula municipal de teatro) in Tijarafe, a musical theatre production (in Spanish) of "El cabaret del Capitán Varela".

At 21:00 at Rocke's bar in Anselmo Perez Brito street, Santa Cruz de la Palma there's the launch party for issue five of Ruido, the local fanzine. Two local groups will perform live: "Suzy Rodríguez y Pedro León" and "No Rula".

Palmeran Hip Hop

For its size, La Palma has a surprisingly vibrent music scene. On Friday, the local Hip hop group La 38 released their first CD, "Cintas Perdidas" (Lost tapes) on the Monkey Family label. Of course all the lyrics are in Spanish.

The group consists of four artists: Falcon, Lese, Soulo y Split, and they've been together since 2004.

You can hear clips of their CD at Myspace:

or see their song "Kaos" (chaos) at You Tube
