The Isaac Newton Telescope in the snow

La Palma has a lovely sub-tropical climate. It's called the land of eternal spring. But today the top of the mountain is covered with snow.

Of course, we only ever get snow at high altitude, and these days, we don't get snow every winter. But when it snows, it can dump several feet in one night.

The Roque is one of the three best sites in the world for astronomy, so there's a major international observatory up there. Of course, they expect occasional snow, so they're geared up for it. They have 4x4 vehicles, and in winter they carry snow chains and shovels, just in case. Unless it's cloudy, they carry right on observing. The snow plough was busy this morning, getting the road open again.

The photo at the top is the Isaac Newton Telescope, looking Christmassy, taken last year.

And this is the the MAGIC telescope this evening, taken with their webcam at http://www.magic.iac.es/webcams/index.html

Helen Bennett

Sunrise over La Palma by Helen Bennett

La Palma has a talented new digital artist called Helen Bennett. She left her high-stress job in London and moved to Franceses, in GarafĂa, with her partner. They bought a fixer-upper and set about fixing it up. Of course this wasn't always smooth going - you can read their adventures at http://casa-estrellas.blogspot.com

Helen also did the layout for several issues of Ruido.

For these two pictures, she used a digital model of the island, and added the lighting.

You can see more of Helen's work at http://helen.helresa.com/

More Almond Blossom

Hillside in Puntagorda, covered with almond trees in blossom.
This year the almond blossom isn't quite as good as previous years, probably because we've had more wind and rain than usual. All the same, I think this hillside above St Maurus's Church is lovely. The photo at the bottom is from the Mirador (viewpoint) de Millflores.

You can see close-ups of blossom at my blog entry for Jan 24th
