Much of the architecture on La Palma dates from the 16th century. In particular, there are many lovely old churches. At one time, all Spanish ships on their way to South America had to restock in Santa Cruz de la Palma. This was pretty much a license to print money. In addition, the landowners got very rich growing first sugar cane, and later grapes. Much of this money was used to build churches and manor houses, many of which survive.
